Ford Mustang Facts


  • The first ford mustang was based on the Ford Falcon compact and produced in Dearborn, Michigan on March 9, 1964.
  • The Ford Mustang made a famous appearance in the James Bond Movie Goldfinger in 1964 and within 18 months sold one million units. The Ford Mustang was among the most successful cars immediately after launch ever.
  • The Ford Mustang was designed by Donald N. Frey and in order to cut the cost of development cost many of its components were based on the Ford Falcon and Fairlane.
  • In the 1960's the Ford Mustang was redesigned to include a larger V8 engine. This caused the size of the car itself to increase. The Mustang was also equipped with a 4 speed transmission over the previously included 3 speed.
  • During the early years each Ford Mustang model was heavier and bigger than the model before it. In the 1970's angry Mustang enthusiasts demanded that Ford return the Mustang back to its original design and make the Mustang a smaller car much like the 1964 model, the original design.
  • Ford created the Mustang II in the 1970's which was based heavily on the Ford Pinto. These new models sold among the best of any Ford Mustang ever produced. However, because of the Arab Oil embargo the consumer focus shifted toward more fuel efficient cars.
  • The focus on efficiency prompted Ford to remove the V8 engines from its mustangs but after receiving many angry letters from enthusiasts, Ford chose to modify the newly designed mustang to receive a V8 engine.
  • In the 1980s Ford Mustang sales began to slump. The Ford Mustang received both exterior and interior redesign in 1987 and it was very popular because of its low cost to performance ratio.
  • The Mustang was redesigned again in the 1990s when Ford created the Mustang IV series. The Mustang was named car of the year for a third time in 1994 and the only major change that occurred with it was a change in the specific engine design.
  • At an auto show in 2004 the Ford introduced the Mustang V or the fifth generation mustang. This new mustang design helped Ford to increase mustang sales which slumped somewhat in the 1990s.
